ELCA Youth Gathering 2018-Day 1 Moorhead to Minneapolis
Today was a full day as we had a brief sending serive with Bishop Terry and then we loaded the bus and headed to Minneapolis. After about an hour, one of the buses in our 3 bus caravan had radiator issues. So they stayed behind and waited for a new bus as the rest of us kept trucking. We stopped for a quick bite at the Mall of America (where our crew chose Panda Express and Burger King), and then headed to Feed My Starving Children to pack food for hungry kids.
The table that our kids were at worked hard. They packed 22 boxes, which is 4752 meals and feeds 13 kids for a year. If you add up the whole crew that packed while we were there, 195 boxes were packed, including 42, 120 meals which is enough to feed 115 kids for a year. We were told that our food would be going to help in Haiti, and we prayed together over the pallette of food we packed that it would reach it's destination and make a difference for the lives it would touch.
Then we headed towards our dorms for the night. Our adventures weren't over for the night though as the bus that we were in narrowly avoided being in an accident with an out of control car that missed the bus but cut right in front of us and crashed into a pole.
As we waited for the ambulance to arrive, some of those on the bus behind us with EMT training went to check out those in the accident. Others prayed for those involved. Thankfully there appeared to be no major injuries. We talked briefly about the accident...how close we were to it, and what would have happened if we had been any further into the intersection. We gave thanks to God for keeping us safe and we prayed for those involved that they could receive the help they needed.
As kids are now winding down in their beds, I thought back to how we started the day. Our Saint Matthew's kids were asked to do the scripture reading. They read Psalm 121. One of the verses in the psalm states: The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.
The Lord is the one that kept us safe today. The Lord is the one who will keep us safe as we fly tomorrow and the Lord is the one that will bring us back safely home to you again.
Thanks for your prayers friends. God is with us. God is with you. And we thank God for your prayers and supprt.
Peace in the journey,
Pastor Amy
